Welcome to the First Night 2009 Call to Artists. We would love to have your submission for the festival.
There are three ways to submit your proposal: by online form, Sonicbids or by mail/email.

Artist proposals are being accepted in all visual and performing arts disciplines for the following programs:
The Afternoon Family Festival:
Performances and hands-on activities focus on children, children’s participation and family entertainment. Examples of programs include face painting, juggling and acrobatics, music, storytelling, puppet performances, crafts and games. |
The Grand Procession:
A Mardi Gras Style parade that begins at the Hynes Convention Center, and moving along Boylston Street including bands, large-scale movable sculptures, puppets, and costumed groups of people. Successful elements include height (9’ - 15’ optimal), and sound. |
Indoor/Outdoor Evening Performances:
First Night indoor sites include theaters, churches, and public auditoriums that seat from 100 - 4,000 people. Most programs are 30 - 45 minutes and can be repeated. Technical support will be limited, and based upon the nature of the performance, site location, scheduling and cost. Outdoor venues include the Parkman Bandstand in Boston Common and a stage in Copley Square. |
Visual Art:
Site-specific, temporary installations that are presented outdoors on the Boston Common, Copley Square, or other sites throughout Boston suggested by the artists. Proposals that incorporate participation by audience members are encouraged. A limited number of indoor exhibition sites are also available. |
Artists may propose projects that directly involve participation of community-based organizations through the First Night Neighborhood Network:
The Neighborhood Network (FNNN) is our community outreach and education program. During the weeks and months leading up to the festival, young people and adults in communities in and around Boston work under the direction of an artist to plan and create pieces, exhibitions and performances that are showcased during First Night. Community organizations, churches and schools as well as individuals are welcome to apply. Artists and organizations may propose that their projects be considered as a FNNN program. A FNNN program must involve community members in developing, fabricating, and activating the artists’ work.
